Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about this site, its calculators, and how the estimates work.
- Is this financial or tax advice?
- No. All information on this site is for general informational and educational purposes only. It does not constitute financial, investment, or tax advice. Cryptocurrency markets are volatile, and tax laws vary by jurisdiction and personal circumstances. Always consult a licensed professional before making financial decisions.
- How often are prices updated?
- Prices are fetched live from the CoinGecko public API when you load a calculator page. If the API is temporarily unavailable or rate-limited, the calculator falls back to the last successfully fetched price stored in your browser and displays a notice that the price may be stale.
- Which coins does this calculator support?
- The calculator supports the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market cap, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano, and more. A hardcoded list of CoinGecko coin IDs powers the dropdown — we do not dynamically search the full CoinGecko coin list.
- Can I use this calculator for tax filing?
- No. The tax calculator provides a simplified US capital gains estimate only. It applies a single-filer bracket approximation and does not account for state taxes, wash-sale rules, crypto-to-crypto trades, staking income, DeFi transactions, or other complex scenarios. Use it as a rough guide, not as a substitute for professional tax preparation.
- How are exchange fees handled?
- You can optionally enter a buy-side fee percentage and a sell-side fee percentage. The fee is applied as a percentage of the trade value on each side. If you leave the fee fields empty, no fee is deducted. The total profit or loss shown is after these fees.
- What is dollar-cost averaging (DCA)?
- Dollar-cost averaging is an investment strategy where you invest a fixed dollar amount on a regular schedule (e.g., $100 every week). This means you buy more of an asset when prices are low and less when prices are high. Our DCA calculator uses historical price data to show how such a strategy would have performed.
- Can I change the sell price for "what-if" scenarios?
- Yes. The sell price field on the profit calculator is auto-filled with the current live price, but you can edit it to any value to explore hypothetical scenarios. The calculator will compute results based on whatever number you enter.
- Does this site collect personal data?
- No. This site does not have user accounts, email signups, or any backend database. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. The only client-side storage used is localStorage, which caches price data so the calculator can fall back to a recent price if the live API is unavailable.
- Where do the historical price data come from?
- Historical prices used by the DCA calculator come from the CoinGecko public API. Data is cached in your browser's localStorage to enable offline-like fallback behavior. The chart may miss very recent days depending on API update latency.
